Francine Silverman – Talk Radio Wants You!

Imagine being able to sit down with a coffee and discuss with hundreds of radio hosts what their shows are about and what kind of guests they’d like to book. You can do just that with Francine Silverman’s new book Talk Radio Wants You: An Intimate Guide to 700 Shows and How to Get Invited.  I have paid $300 or more for talkradio show databases that had far less information than Francine presents in her highly-competivitely priced book.  Broken down into top-level categories, you can browse for shows in your genre, including Politics, Health & Fitness, Food, Sports, Self-Help, Women’s issues, and even Authors.  I would expect most people can find a dozen hot prospects for making their pitch in under half-an-hour, that is if you can stop yourself from endlessly browsing the fascinating entries!  Francine doesn’t stop with AM/FM, also incl
uded are Satellite radio and Podcasts, which can reach thousands of interested listeners you would never get from terrestrial radio.   Each entry includes critical info such as desired guests, host bio, and full contact info so you can tailor your pitch perfectly I can’t recommend this book strongly enough for any author who wants to get into this high-profile, low-cost method of marketing. Only a couple of downsides to mention:  if you’re looking for Gay & Lesbian, Military/Veteran, or Science-Fiction oriented shows you will not find enough listings to make it worthwhile.  Also, I feel like the “What is your guest from hell?” entries were a bit repetitive.  Everyone knows that hosts want an articulate, on-time, and well-spoken guest. If I know Francine, she will amend these in future editions.

Victor R. Volkman – Lighting a fire with eBooks on Amazon Kindle 2

On March 4th, 2009 Irene Watson interviewed publisher, author, and editor Victor R. Volkman about the Amazon Kindle eBook reader platform and how to publish on it. Victor is the President of Loving Healing Press Inc. and its newest imprint Modern History Press. In this wide ranging discussion, we cover key points including:

    • What is the Amazon Kindle?
    • How many Kindles are out there?
    • How many books are really available on the Kindle?
    • Can self-publishers and small presses really compete on the Kindle platform?
    • What kind of conversions issues are there for people doing the work?
    • What’s New with the Kindle 2 product “refresh”?
    • What is the big deal about the new text-to-speech feature that reads books to you?
    • How much are Kindle books and how much do I make as the author or publisher?
Victor R. Volkman began his writing career in the late 1980s writing for computer programming journals such as “Windows Developer’s Journal,” and many other print publications that have been obsoleted since the web was born. He authored two computer programming books in the mid-1990s before finding out that writing for Fortune 500 companies was not terribly profitable. In 2003, he formed Loving Healing Press out of a community project in the Self-Expression and Leadership Program at Landmark Education. Since then, LHP has gone on to publish dozens of cutting-edge books that promote its mission of “redefining what is possible for healing mind and spirit.” As such, he has produced a series of books on Traumatic Incident Reduction as well as empowering other authors in a wide range of helping areas including trauma recovery, self-esteem, physical disabilities, personal growth, and much more. He produces regular podcasts for “
Authors Access,” and the “Unbreak Your Health” show. In 2007, LHP spun off a new imprint Modern History Press dedicated to empowering authors to speak about surviving conflict and seeking identity in modern times. When not publishing, he enjoys spending time with his wife Marian K. Volkman, a formidable author in her own right.

Carol Hoenig – Planning for Successful Book Events

On Feburary 19th, 2009 Alan E. Smith (author of UnBreak Your Health) and Tyler Tichelaar (author of the Marquette Trilogy) spoke with Carol Hoenig, fiction writer and book event expert, about how to plan a successful book sales event.  Carol is the expert behind the new book The Author’s Guide to Planning Book Events and shared generously from her hard-won experiences.Rarely do authors think about book events until they have found a publisher. However, part of being able to snag a publisher is knowing your market. Most authors immediately think they should do events in bookstores, but they ae not always the best place to do an event. Every writer who wants to have a successful book has to start first with good writing and a marketing plan. It doesn’t matter if you’ve been traditionally published or gone the r
oute of self-publishing, the author must take a hands-on approach in marketing their book.

    Carol Hoenig

Carol Hoenig is a fulltime freelance writer and publishing consultant. Her
novel, WITHOUT GRACE, has been given several awards, including the Silver Medal for Book of the Year 2005 by ForeWord Magazine and given First Place for

Her book THE AUTHOR’S GUIDE TO PLANNING BOOK EVENTS was named finalist by USA Book and Reader Views and given the Gold medal by ForeWord Magazine for Book of the Year in the category of writing. Carol’s essays, articles, book reviews and short stories appear in a wide number of publications.
