On October 16th, 2008 Tyler Tichelaar and Victor R. Volkman spoke with award-winning children’s book illustrator and author Kevin Colllier. He educated us on key areas of unique factors in designing and illustrating children’s books, including: how do authors and illustrators find eachother, avoiding a creative tug-of-war with your artist, the importance of chemistry between author and illustrator, project management pitfalls, and how to choose the right number of illustrations for your book.

Kevin Collier is the author and/or illustrator of about 100 books to date (some pending publication). A book he illustrated won the New York Book Festival. Another was reviewed favorably by the New York Times, which only reviews a handful of the tens of thousands of books they receive. As a favor for a minister’s wife, Kevin did some quick illustrations for a poem called Topsy Turvy Land. He never imagined that that she would send those sketchy drawings, done in three days, to a publisher. That book was voted one of the top 50 children’s books of all time by World Magazine in 2006. He is also a critically acclaimed author. His first chapter book, barthpenn at heaven.org, was called “a masterpiece of communication,” and received the Craig’s Choice Award for children’s fiction. His second chapter book, Esther’s Channel, received 5 stars on Amazon.com. Literary professionals have said that Kevin is the “next C.S. Lewis,” and that his “writing will set the standard for children’s literature for generations to come.” Kevin also stars in an upcoming show called “Drawing for KICKS,” which will be broadcast nationally, and possibly internationally, on Christian television stations. An offshoot of internationally broadcast show “KICKS Club,” “Drawing for KICKS” features Kevin, his son, Jarod, and some of Jarod’s classmates. Part reality show, part art class, and all fun, “Drawing for KICKS” is shot primarily in Grand Haven, MI.

On June 19th, 2008 Irene Watson spoke with publisher, author, and editor Victor R. Volkman about the fundamental numbers of the publishing business including ISBN registration and usage, working with the Library of Congress Cataloging-in-Publication program, and the Book Industry Standards Group’s BISAC coding system.  Specifically, we talked about the publishing lifecycle and how library cataloging and sales fits in with rest of the picture in pre-publication publicity. Additionally, we explained the nuts-and-bolts of ISBN registration, working with Books-In-Print, and how distributors and bookstores learn about new titles.

Victor Volkman is the President of Loving Healing Press Incorporated, a small publisher which has been dedicated to producing self-help, psychology, trauma recovery, and personal growth books since 2003.  On Thursday, May 8th, 2008, Tyler Tichelaar and Victor Volkman spoke with Kenneth MacLean from The Big Picture press. He is the author of six books including The Vibrational Universe: Harnessing the Power of Thought to Consciously Create Your Life. He is an expert on collaborative marketing using the Internet through cooperative means including, but not limited to, reciprocal linking, email blasts, monthly newsletters, movie-style trail
, and sharing substantive content with the public.  His newest venture is a book editing service bureau.

His latest projects involve using Internet flash movies to portray the key concepts of his philosophy. On Thursday, November 1st, 2007 Irene Watson and Victor R. Volkman spoke with author, criminologist, and consultant Andrea Campbell from her home in Hot Springs, Arkansas. in Hot Springs Arkansas. Her latest title is the Legal Ease: A Guide to Criminal Law, Evidence and Procedure (2nd Ed.), a reader-friendly book that is now a college law textbook published by Charles C. Thomas Publishers. Andrea shared with us how to find authoritatives sources for crime-scene forensics, evidence handling, police procedure, and court proceedings. She also shared many insider’s tips including how to find and use forensics experts and a realistic look at what it takes to write for the True Crime genre.

She is the author of ten nonfiction books on a variety of topics, but specializes in forensic science, criminal law, and entertaining with interactive parties. Andrea is also Editor for the Arkansas Identification News, a quarterly that goes out to forensic scientists and law enforcement, whom all belong to the International Association for Identification. A trained forensic artist, Andrea is capable of building a bust out of clay from a skull and can do cadaver drawings and fugitive updates. A Diplomate and Fellow with the American College of Forensic Examiners International, Andrea frequently attends forensic science training conferences and blogs on several topics. Currently, she is working on a book about the world’s first detective for Overlook Press.

On Thursday, October 25th, 2007 Tyler Tichelaar and Victor Volkman spoke with writer, journalist, and researcher Liz Carmack. Her love for heritage travel and her desire to provide travelers with a practical reference to Texas’ historic hotels inspired her to write Historic Hotels of Texas: A Traveler’s Guide. Liz shared her hard-won experience and real-life stories of how to define your topic and its scope, identifying and exploiting research and information sources, how to work with an archival library, planning your time to be most effective, developing a useful information filing system, and how to maintain a sense of fun and curiousity about it all.

During her research, Liz traveled more than 20,000 miles across Texas to visit the 64 hotels featured in her book. Liz interviewed local historians, innkeepers and hotel guests, and uncovered historic hotel details in archives, libraries and museums.Liz is a freelance technical and business writer for the public and private sectors in Austin, Texas, and is principal of Liz Carmack Communications. Her travel articles have appeared in Texas Highways, Austin Woman, A, and Heritage magazines. A former newspaper journalist, she is the Austin City Expert for homeandabroad.com.

On October 18th, 2007 Irene Watson and Victor R. Volkman spoke with author, writing coach and mentor Mark David Gerson. He has taught writing as creative and spiritual pursuit for more than 15 years in colleges, universities and community centers, as well as for groups and individuals as a coach and mentor. His upcoming book, a book of inspiration, instruction and practice for writers and anyone who wants to write is The Voice of the Muse: Answering the Call to Write. Mark David shared with us his rationale of why Writer’s Block is a myth, how we create it and how we can un-create it, the role of distractions in blocking us, living with deadlines and commitments, and how we can be in the zone writing.

Before moving to the U.S. in 1997, he worked for more than a decade as full-time as a freelance writer and editor in his native Canada. His latest book, a story about the power of story, is intriguingly titled The MoonQuest: A True Fantasy and is the first volume in a projected trilogy. Mark David also produces a free inspirational e-newsletter every month that reaches more than 1200 subscribers in some two dozen countries. He spoke with us from his home in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

On October 12th, 2007 Victor R. Volkman and Irene Watson spoke with Patrick Snow, bestselling author and book coach. Patrick is author of Creating Your Own Destiny: How to Get Exactly What You Want Out of Life which has sold over 125,000 copies since its first printing in July of 2001. He spoke with us about the crucial elements of cover design and what turns consumers on (or off) when looking at your book. We also talked about realistic amounts to spend on cover design and your role in promoting the book after its printed. Patrick also touched on effective generation of the title and subtitle and how important they are to your platform. He generously shared many real-life examples of books that he has helped shepherd into production.

For more than 20 years, he has studied the field of personal growth and development. On Thursday, Sept 20th, 2007 Tyler Tichelaar spoke with writer and advocate Anya Achtenberg about how to write with an eye for expressing the need for social change. Anya teaches Writing for Social Change: Re-Dream a Just World, a workshop for both new and experienced writers of poetry and prose, fiction and nonfiction to learn effective techniques for presenting social and political viewpoints. She shared with us her philosophy and practice of how to reframe our ideas about writing. Specifically how to write about what moves us from a standpoint that educates and argues for justice without becoming a screed or manifesto. Recognizing who you are and how what you have to say makes a difference in the world

Anya Achtenberg, an award-winning fiction writer as well as poet, has seen her recently completed novel, More Than the Wind, excerpted in Harvard Review, and her novella The Stories of Devil-Girl released on CD. Her second book of poetry, The Stone of Language, was published in 2004 by West End Press (Albuquerque) after being finalist in 5 poetry competitions. Her stories have received awards from Francis Ford Coppola’s Zoetrope: All-Story, New Letters, the Asheville Fiction Writers Workshop, the Raymond Carver Story Contest, and others. Her first book of poetry, I Know What the Small Girl Knew, was published by Holy Cow! Press (MN). She is at work on a novel centering in the experience of a Cambodian woman born of an African American father at the moment the bombing of Cambodia by U.S. forces began. She has taught creative writing widely, including at New York University, School of Visual Arts in NY, Springfield College Boston, Hamline University, the University of Minnesota’s Split Rock Arts Program, the University of New Mexico’s Honors Program, and their summer conference in Taos; for organizations such as The International Women’s Writing Guild—at their yearly conference at Skidmore, at Scandinavia House in Manhattan, at Eleanor Roosevelt’s Cottage in Hyde Park, NY, and at the Santa Fe Women’s Club; at the Center for Contemporary Arts and for Word Harvest in Santa Fe; The Leaven Center—for the bringing together of the political and the spiritual, in Michigan; The Loft in Minnesota; and with drop-out youth, working adults, and through residencies in Minnesota and New York City public schools. She spent years writing curriculum for young people in and out of the public schools.

On Thursday, Sept 13th, 2007 Victor R. Volkman and Tyler Tichelaar spoke with Bob Rich, a writer, editor, and psychologist living in Wombat Hollow, Australia. In addition to writing, He has been a professional editor since 1999, working his way through two books in a typical week. He has worked on everything from abstruse Ph.D. theses and graduate textbooks to children’s picture books, and all genres of fiction. Bob spoke to several key issues of editing including: Why use an editor? Can’t I get my own work right? Surely, if the content is good enough, it doesn’t matter if it is a bit rough in presentation? Won’t the publisher have my book edited after acceptance? So why should I bother with all that grammar and spelling stuff? Are there different kinds of editing? What are they? Do you need specialized knowledge to be able to edit a non-fiction work? Do you need to like a book in order to do a good job editing it? How does editing differ from criticism? What are the kinds of things you look for in a book? How may my book be improved by having it edited by someone like you?

Bob’s services are used by several independent publishers, including Loving Healing Press. However, most of his work is from writers wanting to polish their work before submitting to an agent or publisher (or self-publishing), and comes to him through recommendation from happy clients. He does both line editing and content editing. What I like best is how he applies his deep knowledge and study of human psychology to each editing project. Bob is the author of more than a dozen books on a wide range of topics including the “Earth Garden Building Book: Design and build your own house”, now in its 4th edition, “Woodworking for Idiots Like Me”, Cancer: A Personal Challenge, and many others. Four of them have won international awards.

On August 30th, 2007 Irene Watson and Victor R. Volkman spoke with publishing agent Greg Daniel. Greg formed his own company this year after more than ten years in publishing, six of which were at the executive level at Thomas Nelson Publishers, the largest Christian publisher in the world. Most recently Greg was Vice President and Associate Publisher for W Publishing Group (formerly Word Publishing), a trade book division of Thomas Nelson. He shared with us key questions a new author has to answer: When do you need an agent and when can you go-it-alone? how do you narrow the field of agents and/or publishers? how can you approach an agent in the way that will produce the best results? How can I come up with a sellable book idea? What is a platform and is it really all that important?

Throughout his publishing career, Greg has had the honor of working with in the past such critically acclaimed authors as Brian McLaren, Max Lukado, Phyllis Tickle, Mark Buchanan, Oz Guinness, and Ken Gire. On Thursday, March 29th, 2007 at 8:00PM, Irene Watson and Victor Volkman spoke with personal life coach, and publisher Jane Saylor. In 2001 Jane was asked by the Plymouth Council on Aging to develop a life journaling class for senior citizens in the community. Thus began her journey of helping people write their own memoirs which culminated in her own self-published how-to book The Road You’ve Traveled, How to Journal Your Life.  Jane spoke with us about ways to jog your memories, avoiding roadblocks, and the joy that comes with finding the courage to say what needs to be said.

Jane has taught her journaling workshop all over Southeastern Michigan including Plymouth, Wixom, Northville, and Canton Senior Center as well as the Ypsilanti Library. She is a member of Toastmasters International and often attends the national Speakers Association of Michigan meetings in Ann Arbor.

As a member of the local poetry community Jane created many chapbooks (books of poetry) of her own work as well as being hired to produce chapbooks for others, which are sold throughout the local poetry community. Jane’s most recent book, a wonderful how-to book titled “The Road You’ve Traveled, How to Journal Your Life” chronicles the lesson plans developed for senior citizens. It is available at AuthorHouse.com, from the author herself and at the Book Cellar in Plymouth, Michigan as well as your favorite online bookstore.

Jane received her Associates Degree in Liberal Arts and was on the Dean’s List at Schoolcraft College with focus on Arts and Philosophy in December 2005. She continues to attend Schoolcraft College as well as taking Performance Poetry classes, attending writing retreats, art classes, various enrichment courses. Victor first met Jane at the Holistic Health Festival in Livonia Michigan in August 2006 and was immediately convinced she had a great thing going with helping seniors get their lives in action and in print.

Tyler R. Tichelaar holds a Master’s from Northern Michigan University and a Ph.D. from Western Michigan University. His family’s long relationship with Upper Michigan and his avid interest in genealogy inspired Dr. Tichelaar to write his Marquette Trilogy about his hometown. Along the way, he has become an acknowledged expert on Regional Writing.  Tyler will be speaking with us about what Regional Writing is and how you can take advantage of regional markets.  We’ll also talk about key ingredients for success in regional fiction and how you can get started in this fun and challenging genre.

Tyler/s  trilogy covers 150 years of Marquette, Michigan’s history from the town’s founding in 1849 through its sesquicentennial celebrations in 1999. The titles in the trilogy are “Iron Pioneers”, “The Queen City”, and the soon to be released “Superior Heritage”.
